Pupils have the chance to swim together socially each week, and various competitions take place in the summer term for U12 to U18 age groups.

Housemistress Fran Barnes
I grew up in Essex (yes I am an Essex girl!), and after studying Geography at Lancaster University I taught in an all-girls state school before gaining my PGCE from Goldsmiths in London. I was Assistant Housemistress in a boarding house at Felsted School for 10 years before taking over as Housemistress of a different house for another 3 years. My husband and I moved to the West Country in 2010 when I became Head of Geography at Hazlegrove.
I am passionate about Geography and love nothing more that big, blustery coastal walks in Cornwall. I have undertaken a fair bit of travelling but still have so much of the world to explore. One of my favourite trips was to Iceland – the land of fire and ice. I took 37 Year 7 & 8s on a fieldtrip; their expressions of awe and wonder at the majestic waterfalls, crevassed glaciers and erupting volcanoes will stay with me forever. I love baking – check out my six-layer rainbow cake! I’m also a bit of an adrenaline junkie – I have completed the world’s highest bungee jump and wing-walked on a bi-plane (teenage girls don’t scare me!)
I love my job as Housemistress. No two days are the same (or two hours for that matter). Watching and steering the girls' journey through their school life is a true honour and privilege. Helping them with important preps, watching them play in concerts and matches, listening as they pour out their hearts over the latest boy-band drama; it is all in a days work. Kenelm is a wonderful house; the girls are simply amazing. I live there with my husband Richard (who is Head Fourth Form and teacher of English, RS and sport here at Sherborne Girls) and my daughter Rosie finished her A Levels at Sherborne Girls in 2020. I currently teach Geography.

Sherborne Girls is set in beautiful grounds looking out to the wooded hills beyond Sherborne, and yet is very much still part of the town. The School has extensive playing fields with multiple pitches, tennis courts and an astro pitch.

Sherborne Girls is situated on an expansive 40 acre campus in Dorset. Seven Boarding Houses are called home by a vibrant community of pupils and staff who learn and laugh here each day. Lasting bonds are formed, and staff support the girls in achieving their best.
A Boarding Cubie at Sherborne Girls is a single-bed dorm room. Girls benefit enormously from boarding in the Sherborne community, developing all-important qualities of compassion, empathy, patience, and curiosity, as well as developing independence whilst living together.
A bespoke Performing Arts centre, The Merritt Centre has a fully-equipped concert hall and space for rehearsal. The centre provides a welcoming hub at the heart of the School, benefiting the daily lives of the Sherborne community and nurturing interest in performance.
At Sherborne Girls the Music Department has a long and reputable history. Music plays an important part in School life here, and we offer a wide range of musical opportunities to support this. Almost half of our pupils learn at least one instrument.
Boarding enables pupils to have enormous amounts of fun in their schooling. Pupils at Sherborne Girls laugh every single day. They learn to take responsibility for themselves, and become more resilient and ready to face life after School.
Dining is a key element of Sherborne Girls' pastoral support. It is important that each boarder sits down three times a day with staff and pupils of different ages to eat a proper meal. This develops healthy food habits and appreciation for the social aspect of eating.

In our increasingly visual world, Art and Design challenges the way we think. At Sherborne Girls, we encourage pupils to produce work that responds to the current needs and desires of our global community, whilst developing presentation skills for the working environment.
Music plays a key part in life at Sherborne. The Merritt Centre proudly has 20 purpose-built and sound-proofed practice rooms to support this, providing fantastic facilities for pupils to explore avenues of creativity and foster their musical abilities.
Our Beddington Building houses our Lecture Theatre. Sherborne Girls encourages pupils to broaden their knowledge through societies and additional enrichment courses such as one-year business language courses and the Extended Project Qualification.
Our Library is a welcoming environment for studying and relaxing. The space is divided into two key areas: a traditional library for focused, quiet study, and a second space in which pupils may work in groups or relax with a newspaper, magazine or subject-specific journal.

Our multi-sport astro pitch provides the perfect space for girls at Sherborne to enjoy playing a wide range of sports throughout the school year. The astroturf is just one of many fantastic facilities girls can make full use of to develop their sports skills.
Over 90% of our pupils are boarders, meaning weekends are just as busy as weekdays. The few pupils who do not sleep over are fully integrated into the heart of the School and also stay in Boarding Houses to complete prep, have supper and engage in evening activities.
Pupils develop a wide range of intellectual, creative and practical skills through designing, prototyping, modelling and making products in Design Technology lessons. They explore architectual design, jewellery, 3D digital design, and design for stage and screen.

Sherborne Girls' purpose-built dance studio hosts dance classes thoroughout the year. Dance classes are energetic, fun and exciting way to keep fit. Throughout each term we aim to improve flexibility, stamina and strength while learning some great routines.
Sixth Form girls are encouraged to foster greater academic discipline, responsibility for their own time management and a deeper interest in the world around them. They are supported by staff in developing their independence in preparation for higher education.
The Leiths Food & Wine certificate is a popular sixth form option. Pupils learn how to cook healthy food for themselves, and develop cooking skills which provide a step up on the employment ladder should they wish to carry out culinary work outside School.
The Lower Foyer in the Merritt Centre is home to the Wirth Gallery where a variety of artwork can be displayed. This wonderful exhibition space enables pupils to easily immerse themselves in creativity and find inspiration to fortify their own creative work.
The Merritt Centre has a dedicated recording studio to support pupils' musical ambitions and passions. Almost 50% of our pupils take individual music lessons, and this enthusiasm and interest helps to maintain high numbers in our choirs and instrumental ensembles.
The Oxley Fitness Suite is home to a modern gym fitted out with easy-to-use equipment. Girls using are supervised by qualified instructors who are able to help them achieve their personal fitness goals and develop an appreciation for the benefits of exercise.
The School Hall at Sherborne Girls is a traditional wooden-panelled large space fitted with a stage and dedicated choir gallery. This central hub provides an ideal meeting location for the girls and staff to gather for assemblies, fostering a strong community spirit.

This GCSE covers a wide range of skills, techniques, and processes to design, prototype and model or make primarily functional and aesthetic products, objects, and environments, utilising intellectual, creative, and practical skills.
Areas covered include:- product design, architectural design, jewellery, and body adornment, ceramics, 3D digital design, design for stage and screen.
3D Design GCSE is a good choice for progression on to A Level Design Technology Product Design and combines well with all other subjects.
A bespoke performing Arts Centre, The Merritt Centre has a Concert Hall, space for 80 piece orchestra, 258 seats, AV and sound system with retractable screen, 20 music practice rooms, recording studio, and a rock percussion studio. House-based dining is a key element of our pastoral support. It is important that each boarder sits down three times a day with staff and pupils of different ages, for a sensible period, to eat a proper meal. This helps the girls develop healthy eating habits and an appreciation of the social aspect of eating. Our family dining encourages relationships across year-groups, as well as providing an opportunity for the older girls to look out for their younger peers. ‘Supporters & Listeners’, a team of pupils trained by the School Counsellor, adds an additional layer to the House pastoral system, along with pupil leadership roles throughout the School.

The Library holds an excellent physical collection of academic material in every subject, both essential texts and additional sources. All staff and pupils also have access to electronic material including JSTOR Journal Archive, Encyclopaedia Britannica Online and Grove Music. Library staff are always happy to offer personalised help with finding high quality, reliable information for projects and coursework, as well as study skills and referencing advice.
Our book collection also includes a great selection of classic and modern fiction and the library staff are very keen to recommend the best books! We also subscribe to an e-book platform, which can be accessed at any time, from any device or computer. The Library also stocks DVDs, both to support academic work and just for entertainment and fun.
A number of clubs, including the Carnegie Book Prize Shadowing Club, Creative Writing Group, and Board Game Club, also meet regularly in the library.
Wi-fi, PCs, colour printing and photocopying are all fully available throughout the day and evening, and the Library catalogue can be accessed remotely from any computer in School, and from home, 24/7.
The Library is staffed Monday to Friday: 8.30am - 6pm and Saturday: 8.30am - 12 noon, and staffed by Gap Girls 7.45 - 9pm Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. However, Sixth Form girls can access the space whenever they need to, with their Housemistress’ permission.

Developing an understanding and appreciation of the health-related benefits associated with physical activity and a healthy lifestyle is very important at Sherborne Girls.
Pupils are all full members of the Oxley Sports Centre and have access to the facilities throughout the day, evening, and weekend.
READER HARRIS
Reader Harris was created by amalgamating Thurstan and Ealhstan Houses and named after Dame Diana Reader Harris who was a former Head of the School. It is home to approximately 80 girls, which is around 20 girls in each year group.
The House is immediately opposite the Art and Music blocks, which is hugely appreciated by all our art and music scholars and performers.

We are very proud of our traditional wood-panelled School Hall with choir gallery and stage.
SCHOOL SHOP
The School Shop is located on the east side of the campus and offers the full range of regulation Sherborne Girls branded uniform and sports kit.
An on-line ordering service is offered allowing parents to order and pay for uniform which is then delivered directly to the Boarding House.
In addition a good array of stationery including; notepads, pens, calculators and stamps are also available.

The new Science curriculum focuses on working scientifically with an emphasis on practical work. The aim is to generate more enthusiasm for Science, making it more accessible to students and encouraging more post-16 study of Science
SIXTH FORM, HIGHER EDUCATION & CAREERS CENTRE
Sixth Form girls are encouraged to develop greater academic discipline, responsibility for their own time management and a deeper interest in the world around them.
SPORTS PAVILION
Sherborne Girls has an enviable reputation in lacrosse, hockey and cross-country and the popularity of netball is growing rapidly. The number of girls representing the School in each of these sports is increasing and you will regularly see more than 300 girls playing competitive sport each week.
SWIMMING POOL
Swimming takes place in all three terms with competitions and the chance to swim socially every week.
THE MERRITT CENTRE FOR MUSIC
A bespoke performing Arts Centre. The Merritt Centre has a Concert Hall, space for 80 piece orchestra, 258 seats, AV and sound system with retractable screen, 20 music practice rooms, recording studio, and a rock percussion studio. As well as giving creative arts the facilities they deserve, the new centre provides a welcoming hub at the heart of the School, benefiting the daily lives of the girls, staff and wider Sherborne community.

WINGFIELD DIGBY
Wingfield Digby – named after the family who founded the School and used to live at Sherborne Castle – is in a convenient, central position on the campus.
Wingfield Digby boasts a welcoming and supportive atmosphere where girls can develop their potential to the full and do so in a ‘home from home’. With lots of beloved House traditions, the girls taking a real pride in living here and representing the House.
